“If something burns your soul with purpose and desire, it’s your duty to be reduced to ashes by it. Any other form of existence will be yet another dull book in the library of life.”—Charles Bukowski (via enigmatic-being)
The premise of minimum wage, when it was introduced, was that a single wage earner should be able to own a home and support a family. That was what it was based on; a full time job, any job, should be able to accomplish this.
The fact people scoff at this idea if presented nowadays, as though the people that ring up your groceries or hand you your burgers don’t deserve the luxury of a home and a family, is disgusting.
“Women aged 15-44 are more likely to be maimed or die from male violence than cancer, traffic accidents, and war combined.”—Feminist talk at Students For Liberty’s 2013 Austin Regional Conference and why feminism is not outdated (via cuntcastle)
“To anyone out there who deals with mental illness during the day and horrific nightmares at night. Moment of silence for every one of you. It is a dark dark place with seemingly no escape, a myriad of tunnels, a maze through hell. Many belittle the small triumphs but know this, your very existence shows immense strength.
And to all of you struggling with depression, anxiety, self harm and any other imbalance: I applaud you for making it through another day. Fighting mental illness is one of the most difficult battles to face and many of you face it alone because no one sees the monsters you see, the monsters that you fight every moment. Every day you decide to live on is an amazing victory. And it’s time you were commended for that.”—(via paperdollrage)
“People think they know you. They think they know how you’re handling a situation. But the truth is no one knows. No one knows what happens after you leave them, when you’re lying in bed or sitting over your breakfast alone and all you want to do is cry or scream. They don’t know what’s going on inside your head—the mind-numbing cocktail of anger and sadness and guilt. This isn’t their fault. They just don’t know. And so they pretend and they say you’re doing great when you’re really not. And this makes everyone feel better. Everybody but you.”—William H. Woodwell Jr. (via finalskin)
“I no longer have the energy for meaningless friendships, forced interactions or unnecessary conversations. If we don’t vibrate on the same frequency there’s just no reason for us to waste our time. I’d rather have no one and wait for substance than to not feel someone and fake the funk.”—Joquesse Eugenia (via felicefawn)
“My philosophy is: It’s none of my business what people say of me, and think of me. I am what I am, and I do what I do. I expect nothing, and accept everything. And it makes life so much easier.”—Anthony Hopkins (via stay-ocean-minded)
“Rape jokes are not jokes. Woman-hating jokes are not jokes. These guys are telling you what they think. When you laugh along to get their approval, you give them yours.”—Thomas Millar, Meet the Predators (via analest)
“If you have the privilege to view rape as such an abstract concept that it could be funny to you, then good for fucking you. Not all of us are so lucky, and we’re sure as hell not laughing.”—Ally (via lavenderlabia)
“Back in 2006, I looked at my notebook where I keep track of the books I read and noticed that women seemed weirdly underrepresented, and I said, ‘Whoa dude, that is uncool. 1995 you is ashamed of 2006 you, man. Do better please.’ So, I gave men all of 2007 off. It changed my reading habits for the better and permanently, and the widening of my perspective—not just in literature, but in general—was palpable and welcome. It’s not that you have to keep quotas or whatever, but really: you are a boring person if you don’t listen to half of the human race. Your thoughts can be of no further interest if that’s your point of departure.”—John Darnielle (via chapelofthechimes)
